What is your job now?

I am currently working full-time as a flight attendant for JetBlue Airways and have also been working per diem as float nurse at local community hospital. When I finish my Bachelor’sdegree in May, I plan on applying for a full -time position at the hospital.

As a per-diem float nurse, I never know which floor I will be working on until I get there that day. Once there I will be put with medical surgical patients, often times on the orthopedic floor or telemetry. Everyone I have worked with in the year I have been here has been so amazing and helpful. As a new nurse we are going to have many questions, some days more than others. This is the only we are going to learn. While working on these floors can be challenging, my favorite part is when a patient has their questions answered and they have a smile on their face. That’s when it feels very rewarding.

What is your dream job in nursing?

While every aspect of nursing is interesting, I’ve decided that working with oncology patients is the route I’d like to take.

This is a huge career change for you- from flight attendant to nurse! Tell us about your background.

This is a complete career change for me! Since I was a child, I had always wanted to work in healthcare then decided to take a different career path. I’ve worked for the airlines for thirteen years now with home bases including Washington D.C, New York and Boston. After being furloughed from my first airline in 2006 I came to the realization that this is not a steady career. This made me think more and more about pursuing my first career path.

Why did you choose Labouré over the many other Boston-area college and universities for nursing?

After looking at many schools that offered nursing programs, I chose Labouré due to the outstanding reviews I had received from friends. In addition, I was delighted to hear that the school was not a typical school with classes only offered during the day. As an adult going back to school while working full time it was nice to know there are options. The age and gender of students here varies so much that it makes learning comfortable for all.

What experiences did you have at Labouré that helped you prepare for your career in nursing?

Throughout my time at Labouré, there are a couple experiences that stand out that have prepared me to become a nurse. First I would have to say my clinical instructors. They taught me the importance of time management and organization. Without these skills, it would be nearly impossible to succeed as a nurse.

You went on a pilgrimage to Lourdes, France as part of a service trip through Labouré College. Can you tell us about that experience?

I had the opportunity to participate in a Pilgrimage to Lourdes, France to help the sick. This had been something I had always dreamed of doing. Myself and another student joined a group of three hundred people for week in Lourdes. We attended multiple masses and prayed for the sick. There were people there from all over the world praying for miracles. There were many lifelong friendships made while I was there. I am thankful that Labouré offered this chance to students as it teaches about the sick as well as the silent healing process. This spiritual opportunity has instilled so much in me that it helps me within my nursing career daily.
