Penny Penniman Dedicated Her Life to Opening Doors Wider in Nursing
Penny Penniman will address the Class of 2017 at Laboure’s Commencement. She has worked with students to help them realize their dreams - a career in nursing.
Fifty years ago, Mary Lauriat and her classmates from the Class of 1966 were capped at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross. Ms. Lauriat and her classmates got to revisit this place and their fond memories of Labouré College during their 50th reunion and the Commencement march at the 2016 Commencement ceremony in May.
Lauriat came to Labouré College from Revere, MA, attracted to then Catherine Labouré School of Nursing at Carney Hospital by its great reputation. “It was a great base for my nursing career,” said Lauriat. “My instructors were happy and kind and I remember Sr. Helen Edward at St. Margaret’s Hospital teaching me that a nurses jobs was to advocate for her patients. I never forgot this lesson.”
After Labouré, Lauriat went on to work at Massachusetts General Hospital in the medical ICU and received certifications in geriatric and palliative care. “I felt that being part of a team of caregivers made my work experience that more special and I always worked with the best people,” said Lauriat. “When I look back on my days as a nurse, I miss my patients! I loved being a nurse and anyone considering nursing should go for it! We are special.”
Since retiring, Lauriat spends her days with her husband, three children, four grandchildren, and dog Clementine. She stays busy enjoying yoga, skiing, horseback riding, reading, and knitting.
